A Day in the Life of an Account Executive at Beyond PR

My role and what lead me here...

I’m Charley-Mae, the new Junior Account Executive at Beyond PR. Having studied Biomedical Science at university, I’m fascinated by medical innovations and their impact on society. Healthcare PR is particularly interesting to me because it merges scientific discovery with the strategic communication needed to effectively share these findings with the public and healthcare professionals. My degree has helped me tremendously in this role, enabling me to apply my scientific understanding to the work we do for our clients.

Flexible working, it’s the best of both worlds...

We have a hybrid working policy meaning we have the choice of working at home and from our two offices. I am lucky to choose from either the cosy countryside office in Haywards Heath or the busy London office near Oxford Street. The main difference between my days at each office is the debate about where to go for lunch!

Whether I’m at home or in the office, my colleagues and I start with a quick catch-up in the morning regarding the day ahead, allocating tasks and reviewing project briefs to ensure we stay ahead of deadlines.

After this, my day of work starts.

Morning routine...

My morning routine varies daily, much like the English weather – though it’s a lot less miserable! Typically, the first thing I do is check for any urgent emails. This includes reviewing the press inboxes that we oversee for our medical society clients, checking media registrations for their upcoming congresses, and responding to queries.

I am also responsible for managing and creating targeted media lists, which we use to reach out to journalists. This involves identifying members of the press who are interested in covering news about our clients’ disease areas. Using these lists, I craft and send tailored press invitations to drive congress registrations. I enjoy this work as it allows me to use my creative and persuasive language skills while enabling me to directly liaise with journalists to better understand their interests and priorities.

The rest of my morning is filled with tasks like communicating with clients about ongoing projects, updating regular status reports, and copy-editing new reports and materials that we are producing for the different medical societies.

A typical afternoon...

Recently, my afternoons have been focused on selecting potential press topics for a client’s upcoming congress. To do this, we carry out a comprehensive review of the submitted abstracts to find the most eye-catching and novel studies. Filtering through these new studies to identify those with a fresh and impactful angle for the media is incredibly interesting.

Once we have our abstract shortlist, we dive deeper into the studies, monitoring the media for similar research and conducting our own investigations into the topics to gain a full understanding of the findings. It’s something I really enjoy, even if it sounds a bit nerdy!

The rest of my day is taken up by tasks like writing the newsletters that we send out for certain societies, collating media coverage from our latest media campaigns, and creating social media posts to promote our clients’ recent activities.

To finish the day, we have a final team get-together to review our progress and look at tomorrow’s agenda. After work, I like to unwind with a restful evening of golf or by catching up with my current book.
